September 18, 2024: City of Peterborough selects OEI to review airport governance
The City of Peterborough, Ontario, has retained OEI to conduct a governance review for Peterborough Airport.
The study is to determine the best form of governance for Peterborough Airport (YPQ) by considering optimal strategic and operational decision-making, and to define the arguments and incentives for partnership in changing the airport governance model.
“We’re extremely pleased that the City of Peterborough has selected OEI for this important work. This will require considerable consultation with the City, regional communities, the airport’s users, tenants, and business stakeholders,” said OEI President Rob Beynon.
The engagement will include a review of the airport’s existing governance and operations identify challenges facing the City and YPQ, assess governance models at other airports of similar size, and analyze the practices of other governance models.
The largest city along the Trent-Severn Waterway, Peterborough is home to 84,000 residents and is situated 125 km northeast of Toronto.
Peterborough Airport history and services to the community
YPQ features a 7,000-foot runway that can support Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320 series aircraft. It is also a CANPASS Port of Entry airport that allows private aircraft crossing the US-Canada border expedited clearance for passengers.
YPQ is home to an aviation business park as well as charter flight services, recreational pilots, and aviation education. It provides critical support for emergency services in the region, including medevacs and air traffic control.
Economic investment and value to the region
On site, 20 businesses at the airport directly employ more than 500 positions in the aviation and aerospace industry. According to its 2022 master plan, YPQ provided more than $90 million in GDP to the region. Since 2010, $35 million has been invested in infrastructure improvements at the airport.
